How are UK universities celebrating Black History Month in 2025?
October is Black History Month and this year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” celebrates the resilience and strength of Black communities worldwide. Across the UK, universities are commemorating this important month through a variety of impactful initiatives — we highlight five exceptional examples below.
#1 Shaping stories and celebrating black voices at the University of London
The University of London is hosting a range of initiatives throughout October, including exhibitions, seminars, film screenings and library showcases. Highlights include the Black Atlas exhibition at the Warburg Institute, a new seminar series on African History and Migration and Mobility, and curated displays at Senate House Library exploring Black heritage and culture.
#2 Uplifting culture and connection at Edge Hill
This year’s celebrations include a series of events and initiatives highlighting black joy, creativity and belonging. Highlights feature the "Small Acts, Big Impact" workshop on navigating microaggressions, a film-club screening and thought-provoking art installations such as "Strong as One" and "Community and Inclusion". A curated reading list, streaming collection and activities led by the Staff Multicultural Network further encourage reflection and learning across the university community.
#3 Black Voices and bold stories at University of Bedfordshire
Highlights include a panel discussion on Black history and identity, a screening of "The Black Panther" followed by a discussion and a cultural showcase featuring music, dance and poetry. These initiatives celebrate Black heritage, promote inclusivity and foster a deeper understanding of Black history and culture within the university community. Find out more.
#4 Giving voice and space at Royal Holloway
Royal Holloway’s Students’ Union is activating a varied programme of fun, creative and educational events throughout October including: socials, panel discussions, performances and interactive reflections designed to celebrate Black students and staff, foster connection, and prompt meaningful conversation around identity, power and pride. The SU aims to provide open platforms for expression, engagement and community across campus.
#5 Pride in power and purpose at York St John
York St John is embracing this year’s theme with a packed October programme of talks, creative showcases and readings. Events include a guest lecture from Dr Leon Sealey-Huggins exploring decolonisation and climate justice; a student-made film screening of "Idia: Dance of Ascension"; and the “Black Rainbow Cabaret”, which will bring together dance, song, spoken word and art. With recommended reading lists and resources also on offer.
